Το πρόγραμμα AlSiCal, είναι μια φιλόδοξη ερευνητική καινοτόμος δραστηριότητα , η οποία έχει σαν στόχο την βελτίωση της αειφορίας και της περιβαλλοντικής επίδοσης της μεταλλευτικής και μεταλλουργικής βιομηχανίας. Το πρόγραμμα θα ερευνήσει και αναπτύξει περαιτέρω την πρωτοποριακή και πατενταρισμένη τεχνολογία Aranda – Mastin (AM). Αυτή η τεχνολογία επιτρέπει την ταυτόχρονη παραγωγή τριών προϊόντων ( βασικών πρώτων υλών) αλουμίνας, SiO2 και CaCO3 από νέες Ο.Π.Υ π.χ ανορθοσίτη ενώ δεν δημιουργεί παραπροϊόντα και απορρίμματα (ZERO WASTE ).
H τρέχουσα βιομηχανική δραστηριότητα παραγωγής αλουμίνας από βωξιτικά κοιτάσματα με την διαδικασία Bayer, παράγει μεγάλο όγκο στερεών αποβλήτων την γνωστή ερυθρά ιλύ απελευθερώνοντας ταυτόχρονα μεγάλες ποσότητες CO2 στην ατμόσφαιρα. Η υπό μελέτη και ανάπτυξη καινοτόμος τεχνολογία ΑΜ, θα επιτρέπει :
- την «πράσινη συμπαραγωγή» τριών βασικών πρώτων υλών , σε μία διεργασία και από μία ορυκτή πρώτη ύλη, με περιβαλλοντικά και οικονομικά οφέλη
- την αποτελεσματική χρήση του ανορθοσίτη, ενός ορυκτού το οποίο απαντάται σε αφθονία στην Ευρώπη αλλά και σε παγκόσμια κλίμακα
- την ολοκληρωμένη αξιοποίηση του παραγόμενου CO2 και την δέσμευση του ώστε να επιτευχθούν μηδενικές εκπομπές στην ατμόσφαιρα
- την μηδενική παραγωγή αποβλήτων υποκαθιστώντας την χρήση του βωξίτη για την παραγωγή αλουμίνας.
