Physical Object:
The physical scope of the project includes the digitization of HSGME’s paleontological archive, specifically:
- Digitization of the analogue archive of micropaleontological, paleontological, and palynological specimens and creation of a database (including specimen information, correlation with geological map sheets, etc.), as well as completion of missing data where feasible.
- Digitization of analogue reports on the specimens and integration with the database.
- Digitization of analogue studies on micropaleontological, paleontological, and palynological samples and integration with the database.
- Organization and archiving of the specimens in the pre-existing, specially designed space at HSGME’s central facilities (former IGME) in the Olympic Village, ensuring accessibility for analysis and research by interested users.
Purpose – Expected Results:
This project is considered highly important, as the preservation and restoration of the archival material will safeguard valuable geological knowledge collected from across Greece over the past 70 years. The digital classification and availability of the Paleontology Archive (including studies, bibliographic material, reports, and specimens) will provide access to researchers, scientists, and students from Greece and abroad, enhancing their understanding of the geology of various Greek regions. Furthermore, the creation of an online atlas of paleontological samples for the different geotectonic zones and regions of Greece represents an innovative contribution, aligning with international best practices in geoscience for data dissemination and reuse.
