More than 40 national and regional Geological Surveys from over 30 European countries are participating in the co-funded ERA-NET action “Establishing the European Geological Surveys Research Area – Towards a Geological Service for Europe (GeoERA)”.
The main objective of GeoERA is to integrate the knowledge and information of the participating organizations regarding subsurface resources, in order to support the sustainable use of the subsurface and address some of Europe’s major societal challenges.
GeoERA was launched through EuroGeoSurveys – the organization of European Geological Surveys – as part of the implementation of the “Vision for a Geological Service for Europe”, and extends to all Geological Survey Organizations (GSOs) across the continent. The total project budget amounts to €30.3 million, of which €10 million is provided by the European Commission, with the remainder contributed in kind by the participating GeoERA partners to support transnational projects. HSGME’s budget for the subprojects it implements is €246,000. The initiative provides interoperable, pan-European data and information services concerning the distribution of geo-energy resources, groundwater, and mineral raw materials, along with harmonized assessment methodologies. It also develops common frameworks and methods to support European national and regional policy makers in better understanding and managing the interconnected system of water–energy–raw materials, assessing potential impacts and risks associated with subsurface use.
“The outcomes of GeoERA can support policy planning and decision-making at the European level regarding accessibility, availability, and sustainable use of subsurface resources — a key component in addressing one of Europe’s major societal challenges: balancing economic development and shared social welfare while maintaining a healthy and safe environment for its citizens.”
GeoERA is coordinated by the Geological Survey of the Netherlands (TNO) and supported by a consortium of 45 Geological Surveys and organizations at national and regional levels, acting as program managers and/or data custodians from more than 30 countries. These Geological Surveys are the main authorities responsible for collecting, managing, interpreting, and delivering data and information on surface, marine, and subsurface resources across Europe.
