The EMODnet-Geology project (European Marine Observation and Data Network) https://www.emodnet-geology.eu/ is a long-term initiative launched in 2007 by the European Commission as part of its integrated maritime policy action plan. The project’s main objective is to improve access to and visualization of marine data. To achieve this, national geological surveys and research institutes across Europe collaborate to create and provide harmonized data products (maps) and datasets. The project’s activities include digitizing existing data in a GIS environment and developing harmonized (INSPIRE-compliant) digital maps for Europe’s marine basins, covering multiple thematic layers:
- Seabed Substrate
- Sea-floor Geology
- Coastal Behavior
- Events & Probabilities
- Marine Minerals
- Submerged Landscapes
- Entity Indexes
This “collect once and use many times” philosophy benefits all users — including policymakers, scientists, the private sector, and the general public.
