Groundwater Monitoring Network of Greece (DIPYNE)
The Hellenic Survey of Geology and Mineral Exploration (HSGME), within the framework of the “Environment and Climate Change” Programme (PEKA) of the Programming Period 2021–2027, is implementing the project “Groundwater Monitoring Network of Greece (DIPYNE)”.
DIPYNE is a project of strategic importance for Greece, as it will provide scientifically substantiated information through the systematic monitoring of the qualitative and quantitative characteristics of the country’s Groundwater Bodies (GWBs), in compliance with the requirements of the relevant Directives and national legislation (2000/60/EC, 2006/118/EC, 91/676/EEC, PD 51/2007), as well as the guidelines of the Directorate General for Water of the Ministry of Environment and Energy (YPEN).
Its contribution will be a milestone in decision-making processes, in the rational management of groundwater resources, and in their protection from both qualitative and quantitative degradation, given that Greece depends heavily on these resources for water supply, irrigation, and industrial use.
The project’s results are essential for the revision of the River Basin Management Plans (RBMPs) and for supporting the activities of the Directorate General for Water. Furthermore, the implementation of this project by HSGME will meet national needs and obligations toward the European Union while strengthening national water policy.
