A hub of knowledge, progress, and scientific research, the historic library of the H.S.G.M.E. has been contributing to the geological scientific community since 1924, when it was first established as part of the Geological Office of the Ministry of National Economy. It ranks among the largest and most specialized scientific libraries in Greece and is one of the most up-to-date in the field of geosciences.
Scientific institutions from Greece and abroad, independent researchers, students, and of course, the scientists of the H.S.G.M.E., have access to more than 88,000 titles — including 12,000 unpublished scientific and technical reports and studies, around 4,500 maps (dating back to 1891), and 40,000 issues of Greek and international scientific journals. Additionally, 277 books are classified as “Rare Editions,” dating from the 19th century.
The digitization of the library’s collection has already begun, allowing anyone — whether visiting in person or remotely — to “travel” through time and explore key moments in the planet’s evolution. The library’s bibliographic data are accessible via the link: https://libraryigme.openabekt.gr/
Currently, the library is open to visitors by appointment only, which can be arranged via library@igme.gr or by calling 2131337057–7058, in order to avoid overcrowding due to COVID-19 precautions.
