DEPARTMENT OF ORE DEPOSIT & MINING RESEARCH.
The Department of Ore Deposit and Mining Research (KOIME) operates under the Directorate of Mineral Resources and Mining (DOPME) of E.A.G.M.E. The responsibilities of the Department of Ore Deposit and Mining Research (KOIME) include:
- Conducting research and studies for the identification and evaluation of all types of mineral raw materials (MRMs), in order to assess the country’s ore deposit potential, including reserve calculations from secondary sources such as mining wastes,
- Issuing suitability assessments of MRMs in collaboration with other units of the Authority,
- Participation in committees for the designation of quarrying areas,
- Development of mineral raw materials databases,
- Carrying out mining research for the evaluation of mineral deposit potential and assessing the feasibility of their exploitation, as well as geostatistical studies for mineral resource evaluation and geological applications,
- Identification, investigation, and study of solid energy raw materials of economic interest,
- Research into the non-energy uses of lignite,
- Identification and ore deposit research of uranium, thorium, and associated by-product metals such as rare earths,
- Radiation protection of the population from alpha, beta, and gamma radiation,
- Assessment of the role of radiation in understanding the seismic hazard of regions,
- Preparation of techno-economic studies and studies on the exploitation and utilization of mineral deposits, including participation in environmental studies,
- Coordination and support of the Authority’s research projects in techno-economic studies,
- Operation of the accredited “LITHOS” Laboratory with activities including: a) laboratory determination of the aesthetic, physical, and mechanical properties of natural decorative stones and mosaics for quality evaluation, b) support in the CE marking of final decorative stone products, c) conducting inspections to resolve issues arising after the use of decorative stone products,
- Operation of the accredited Laboratory of Energy Raw Materials, specializing in the analysis of solid energy raw materials (coal, peat, and radioactive materials).
*The Department of Ore Deposit and Mining Research (KOIME) also oversees the "LITHOS" Laboratory of E.A.G.M.E. More information about "LITHOS" can be found HERE.
