The National Geological Museum represents the first coordinated initiative of the Greek state to showcase the country’s Geological Cultural Heritage. Established in 2021 by HSGME, the museum was created on the site of the former Museum of Minerals and Rocks. Following a complete redesign, it now operates in a specially designed space at HSGME’s Central Facilities, under the Authority’s full supervision and management.

Its mission is to highlight and protect Greece’s geological wealth and to demonstrate the crucial role it has played in the history and shaping of the ancient world, as well as in modern and contemporary Hellenism, while presenting its historical and scientific value on a global scale.

Through its collections, the museum appeals both to the general public and to the scientific community, presenting significant geological specimens from across Greece, including minerals, fossils, and rocks. At the same time, it serves as a hub of knowledge and research on the nation’s geological heritage.

The exhibition halls showcase the long evolution of geological research, the richness of Greece’s geology, and its geological cultural heritage. Its collections are ranked among the most extensive worldwide, earning the museum the title of the country’s “Geological Treasury.”
