A meeting with the Mayor of Phaistos, Mr. Grigoris Nikolidakis, was held on September 14, 2021, by a delegation from the Regional Unit of Crete of the Hellenic Survey of Geology and Mineral Exploration (H.S.G.M.E.), with the aim of updating the water borehole database and preparing a modern, unified hydrogeological map.
The delegation, consisting of the Head of the Regional Unit of Crete, Mr. Giannis Michalakis, and geologist Ms. Eleni Tsolaki, presented to Mayor Grigoris Nikolidakis and the General Secretary of the Municipality of Phaistos, Mr. Giannis Iliadis, the long-standing work of H.S.G.M.E. in Crete. The discussion focused on coordinating actions between H.S.G.M.E. and the Municipality of Phaistos for the implementation of the project’s physical scope under the “Systematic Recording of Water Boreholes” initiative of the S.A.M.Y. II Project in the Water District of Crete. Primary data are already being intensively collected from boreholes, and in the coming period, a new updated database covering all boreholes in the Messara region will be developed, along with a unified hydrogeological map.
During the meeting, other issues within the Authority’s areas of competence were also discussed, and opportunities for further collaboration with the Municipality of Phaistos were explored.
