As part of the Geoinfra Project, which includes Geological Mapping Actions in Greece to support Innovation and Entrepreneurship, a team from the Hellenic Survey of Geology and Mineral Exploration (H.S.G.M.E.) carried out a visit to Chios, aiming to promote the island’s geological heritage.
The team, consisting of Ms. Eugenia Moraiti, Geologist and Scientific Coordinator of Work Package 5, and Ms. Vasiliki Barsaki, Geologist–Geoenvironmentalist, met with the Deputy Regional Governor of the Regional Unit of Chios, Mr. Pantelis Vroulis, and the advisors Ms. Dimi Mylonadi, Mr. Georgios Strongylopoulos, and Mr. Leonidas Athinadis. The meeting focused on coordinating actions between H.S.G.M.E. and the Regional Unit of Chios to highlight the area’s geodiversity.
The aim of these initiatives is to record and promote geosites and to create digital material that will disseminate information to the public, enabling visitors and travelers to discover the geology, biodiversity, history, and culture of the region.
During their stay on the island, the geologists visited several sites of interest across Chios, with the assistance and guidance of local residents, while modern tools such as UAVs were used for optimal mapping and visualization.
