The Hellenic Authority for Geological and Mineral Research (H.S.G.M.E.), in collaboration with the Institute for the Study and Monitoring of the Santorini Volcano (IMPHS), is organizing an information event as part of the Scientific Meeting of the International Expert Committee for the Assessment of the Submarine Volcanic Risk of the Kolumbo Volcano (Santorini).
The event will take place on Thursday, May 11, 2023, at 19:30, in the Loukas and Evangelos Bellonias Foundation Hall in Fira, Santorini.
As part of the research project “Assessment of Volcanic Hazard and Susceptibility at the Active Volcanoes of Greece”, H.S.G.M.E. has prepared and is implementing the “Volcanic Hazard Assessment Program for the Submarine Kolumbo Volcano” in Santorini.
Within this framework, the meeting of the International Expert Committee on volcanic hazard and risk assessment is being held in Santorini from May 9 to 11, 2023.
The committee consists of 18 leading scientists from Greece and abroad, who are tasked with assessing and determining, through structured evaluation procedures, the likelihood of potentially hazardous volcanic events from the Kolumbo volcano (volcanic ash and gases, volcanic earthquakes, tsunamis, etc.), as well as identifying the areas at risk. The results and assessments will be made available to the Local and Regional Authorities and the General Secretariat for Civil Protection (G.S.C.P.), in order to be incorporated into the updated Volcanic Hazard Response Plans for Santorini and the wider area (the “TALOS Plan”).
