The Hellenic Authority for Geological and Mineral Research (EAGME) has fully mobilized to address the consequences of the devastating floods in the affected areas of Thessaly.
From the very onset of the destructive phenomena caused by storm “DANIEL,” teams of specialized scientists were deployed to the flood-stricken areas to conduct extensive field inspections, aiming to develop a comprehensive preliminary assessment of the landslide events that occurred, as well as possible secondary impacts related to soil erosion and the effects on groundwater aquifers.
Specifically, a team from the Directorate of Water Resources and Geothermal Energy (DIPOYE) visited the Thessaly region to assist with issues related to potential contamination of the groundwater aquifer, as well as the impact on drinking water wells and springs in the wider area. In this context, the team met with the Mayors of Palamas, Farkadona, and Larissa, as well as with representatives of local Municipal Water and Sewerage Companies.
In addition, a second team from the Department of Hydrogeology and Hydrology (YDROGE) visited the area of Giannouli’s workers’ housing district to evaluate the phenomenon of persistent floodwater accumulation in the area and its possible correlation with geological and hydrogeological factors.
At the same time, within the framework of the Memorandum of Cooperation between EAGME and the General Secretariat for Civil Protection (GSCP), extensive engineering-geological surveys have already been carried out—and continue to take place—by the Rapid Response Team in the municipalities of Limni Plastira, Meteora, Argithea, South Pelion, Zagora, Kileler, Trikala, Mouzaki, and Volos, aiming to assess the landslide phenomena that have occurred.
The engineering-geological inspections in the affected areas are conducted by specialized scientists from the Department of Engineering Geology (TE.GE.) of the Directorate of General and Applied Geology (DI.G.E.G.), with the assistance of staff from the Directorate of Natural and Technological Risk Management (D.FY.TE.K.) and the Regional Units of Epirus and Central Macedonia of H.S.G.M.E.
As the state’s technical advisor on geohazard management and response, EAGME, in close cooperation with the competent services of the Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection and the Local Government Organizations (LGOs) of the affected areas, will contribute to all necessary assessments and the formulation of proposed restoration measures.
