A scientific team from the Hellenic Survey of Geology and Mineral Exploration (ΕΑGME), consisting of Dr. Georgios Vougioukalakis, Volcanologist, and Geologist Markos Xenakis, conducted field measurements at the summit of Nea Kameni, located at the center of the Santorini caldera. The mission was carried out in collaboration with the Institute for the Study and Monitoring of the Santorini Volcano (ISMOSAV) and with the support of the Thira Boatmen’s Association.
The ΕΑGME team performed measurements of fumarolic and soil-emitted gases, assessed the physicochemical conditions of the area, and documented the site’s thermal state using high-resolution infrared imaging.
The scientific team will continue its physicochemical observations and measurements across the entire Santorini volcanic complex, including Palaia Kameni, Thira, and Thirassia.
