In Santorini, where the heart of geology truly beats, the Hellenic Survey of Geology and Mineral Exploration (H.S.G.M.E.) is hosting the 59th General Meeting of the European Association of Geological Surveys (EuroGeoSurveys) from October 14 to 16, 2025.
The EuroGeoSurveys (EGS) is the leading collective body of Europe’s Geological Surveys, bringing together 37 member countries. The General Meeting gathers the Heads of the European Geological Surveys to develop common strategies and strengthen collaboration on key issues related to geosciences, natural resources, and environmental protection.
For the hosting of this significant event, the H.S.G.M.E. chose Santorini — a place that has long served as a living laboratory for geoscientists, historians, and archaeologists alike. In this unique geological environment, the Heads of the European Geological Surveys will discuss current challenges, strategic priorities for the European geological community, and major developments in the field of raw materials.
The discussions of the 59th General Meeting will focus on:
- enhancing European cooperation in the utilization of geoscientific data and the creation of shared knowledge infrastructures,
- promoting sustainable and secure access to critical mineral raw materials through new institutional initiatives and partnerships,
- linking geological research with Europe’s green and energy transition, and
- expanding the role of geological services as institutional pillars for the sustainable management of subsurface resources (minerals, geoenergy, and water).
The organization of the 59th General Meeting of EuroGeoSurveys in Greece highlights the international recognition and institutional standing of the H.S.G.M.E., as the last time a similar event was hosted in the country was in autumn 2007 in Athens by the then Institute of Geology and Mineral Exploration (IGME).
The presence of representatives from Europe’s Geological Surveys in Santorini is expected to strengthen knowledge exchange, foster new collaborations, and shape joint initiatives for the decade ahead — at a time when geology is at the core of Europe’s green and digital transformation.
Staying true to its longstanding tradition and institutional mission, the H.S.G.M.E. takes an active role on the international geological stage, positioning Greece as a pillar of knowledge, innovation, and cooperation in the geosciences.
