The project is a core tool for managing extractable water volumes efficiently and protecting groundwater from over-abstraction. It focuses on the systematic inventory of all groundwater boreholes nationwide across the country’s Groundwater Bodies (GWBs), recording the quantities of water withdrawn both by use (drinking water supply, irrigation, industrial, etc.) and by GWB.
It also supports the effective implementation of the EU Water Framework Directive 2000/60/EC, as well as Directives 118/2006/EC and 676/91/EEC, and underpins the design, execution and monitoring of policies for the sustainable management of water resources.
The project is funded through the Operational Programme “Transport Infrastructure, Environment and Sustainable Development” (NSRF 2014–2020/2023) and is scientifically led by Dr. Panagiotis Sambatakakis, Director of Water Resources and Geothermal Energy at EAGME.
