During an event celebrating the completion of the “Geoportal” project, the Information Society and the Hellenic Survey of Geology and Mineral Exploration (H.S.G.M.E.) announced the upcoming signing of a programmatic agreement for the development of a new digital project titled “Geoconnect.”
The event, held yesterday at the H.S.G.M.E. amphitheater in the Olympic Village, was attended by representatives of the State, public bodies, and members of the scientific and professional community. It highlighted the pivotal role of digital transformation in the geosciences through the Geoportal initiative.
In his address, the Deputy Minister of Digital Governance and Artificial Intelligence, Mr. Christos Dermetzopoulos, praised the collaboration between the Information Society and the H.S.G.M.E., emphasizing that the Geoportal is a strategic development tool marking a new era in geospatial data management.
The Secretary General for Energy and Mineral Raw Materials at the Ministry of Environment and Energy, Ms. Despoina Paliarouta, highlighted the multi-level contribution of the Geoportal to entrepreneurship, innovation, and the dissemination of scientific knowledge with transparency and accessibility.
The CEO of the Information Society, Mr. Stavros Asthenidis, noted: “After six years at the Information Society, working with the Ministry of Digital Governance to design and deliver these projects—projects that I believe have transformed Greek public administration—we can now see the tangible results of this effort. We are proud not only to deliver projects but also to collaborate with institutions that embrace technology and are open to digital transformation. For us, digital transformation has no limits or borders—it is not about machines; it is about people. It is a culture of cooperation, openness, and trust.”
The “host” of the event, Mr. Dionysios Goutis, General Director of the H.S.G.M.E., welcomed participants and thanked all the working groups that contributed to making this important project a reality. “Knowledge has true value when it is freely accessible to everyone,” he said. “The Geoportal was a challenging endeavor. With a single click, users can identify geological formations across the country. They can view landslides, mines, water quality, mineral boreholes, and a wide range of geospatial data. They can even explore the National Geological Museum and our library online, which includes over 10,000 reports—a testament to the H.S.G.M.E.’s more than 100 years of contribution to Greece.”
Mr. Stathis Kechriotis, Sales Director Public, EU & International Organizations at OTE / General Manager at Cosmote Global Solutions, also expressed his full satisfaction with the cooperation among the stakeholders involved in implementing the Geoportal.
During the event, Ms. Aspasia Zalachori, CTO of the H.S.G.M.E., and Mr. Nikolaos Androulakakis, Scientific Coordinator of the Geoportal, presented the platform’s capabilities and tools in detail. Through thematic maps, GIS services, and advanced search functions, the Geoportal creates a unified, dynamic environment of knowledge that facilitates the study, comparison, and utilization of geospatial information by researchers, organizations, and citizens.
The Geoportal is available at geoportal.eagme.gr, offering everyone the opportunity to explore and utilize Greece’s geological and geoscientific wealth through a modern, user-friendly, and interactive platform.
