As part of the 54th meeting of the Directors-General of the European Geological Surveys Organization (EuroGeoSurveys / EGS - The Association of the Geological Surveys Organizations of Europe), held in Dublin, the General Director of the Hellenic Survey of Geology and Mineral Exploration (H.S.G.M.E.), Mr. Dionysios Goutis, and his Cypriot counterpart, Mr. Christodoulos Chatzigeorgiou, Director of the Geological Survey Department of the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment of Cyprus, signed a Memorandum of Cooperation and Mutual Understanding.
The purpose of the Memorandum is to promote the following actions:
- The exchange of expertise and the development of joint activities in the fields of geological mapping, research and study of Mineral Raw Materials and groundwater resources, geohazards, geodynamics, marine geology, geochemistry, geophysics, paleontology, mineralogy–petrology, geological, mining and cultural heritage, and other related disciplines. Particular emphasis will be placed on the management of water resources and alternative management (including utilization) of mining waste.
- Collaboration in submitting joint proposals for research projects in areas of common interest, as well as mutual support for the participation of each contracting party in European and international project consortia.
- Cooperation in conducting joint research studies, publications, and presentations in areas of mutual interest.
- Mutual utilization of geological data, infrastructure, and laboratory equipment, as well as the exchange of expertise and experience between the contracting parties to achieve the objectives of the Memorandum.
- Cooperation in organizing conferences, seminars, workshops, and lectures in fields of shared scientific interest.
The signing of the Greece–Cyprus Memorandum marks the culmination of a long-standing and fruitful collaboration between the two Geological Surveys, which have consistently demonstrated their shared commitment to advancing the geosciences and to promoting scientific knowledge and research within their respective fields of activity.
