The pivotal role of the Hellenic Survey of Geology and Mineral Exploration (H.S.G.M.E.) in utilizing Greece’s Mineral and Energy Resources was highlighted during the successful conference co-organized by the HSGME and the Association of Greek Geologists (SEG) under the auspices of the Geotechnical Chamber of Greece (GEOTEE) at the Ministry of Environment and Energy.
The highly engaging event, titled “Geoenergy: Prospects and Challenges,” focused on hydrocarbons and geothermal energy — aiming for a comprehensive approach to the technical, environmental, and policy parameters that shape their utilization in Greece and Europe, within the context of the energy transition.
The conference was opened by the General Director of HSGME, Mr. Dionysios Goutis, and the President of SEG, Ms. Maria Tzima.
The event brought together leading representatives from government, industry, and the scientific community.
During their remarks:
- The Deputy Minister of Environment and Energy, Mr. Nikos Tsafos, emphasized that Greece will continue exploring for natural gas deposits, taking into account the cost–benefit balance for the state and citizens. He referred to the significant shift in the country’s energy mix from lignite to renewables, underlining the strategic importance of geothermal energy for the future.
- Member of the European Parliament, Mr. Dimitrios Tsiodras, announced that at the beginning of 2026 the “Geothermal Action Plan” will be presented to the European Parliament, highlighting the shared European strategy.
- Member of the European Parliament, Mr. Giannis Maniatis, stressed the need for a new national strategy to strengthen Greece’s geopolitical position, with a focus on ensuring tangible benefits for local communities.
In the strictly scientific field, discussions on hydrocarbon prospects centered on renewed investment interest, potential national benefits, and the challenges that must be addressed for the full exploitation of deposits.
Regarding geothermal energy in Greece, it was noted that despite the country’s comparative advantages, geothermal potential has not yet been fully utilized for electricity production.
All speakers agreed on the urgent need for a stable financial framework and strong investment incentives from the State.
