Immediately after the heavy rainfall of November 10, 2020 in Crete and the resulting flooding and landslide events, the Rapid Response Team of the Hellenic Survey of Geology and Mineral Exploration (H.S.G.M.E.) was activated to address geological hazard–related disasters. The team consisted of Ioannis Michalakis, Geologist M.Sc., and Evangelos Zourmpakis, Mining Engineer, from the Regional Unit of Crete.
The purpose of the field inspections, conducted in cooperation with the respective Regional Units and the Civil Protection Service of the Region of Crete, was to identify and record hazardous locations along primary and secondary road networks of the island, as well as to provide an immediate assessment of potential risks — mainly those related to rockfalls, slope instabilities, and roadbed undercutting.
Phenomena have already been examined along the main and secondary road networks in the affected areas, while the team’s work is ongoing, continuing to investigate additional geohazard-related damage in support of the institutional mission of the Authority.
The following photographic material shows field inspections carried out by the Rapid Response Team on November 11, 12, and 17, 2020, at various locations across the island’s primary and secondary road networks, as well as in areas impacted by the disaster.
