On May 6, 2021, the Head of the Regional Unit of Eastern Macedonia – Thrace (R.U.E.M.T.) of the Hellenic Survey of Geology and Mineral Exploration (H.S.G.M.E.), Dimitrios Exioglou, met with the Mayors of Orestiada, Vasileios Mavridis, and Didymoteicho, Romylos Chatzigiannoglou.
Both mayors were briefed on the activities of the R.U.E.M.T. from 1976 to the present, as well as on its contribution to the local community through the immediate response to hydrogeological problems, landslides, and destructive phenomena.
In particular, during the meeting with the Mayor of Orestiada, an extensive discussion took place regarding research conducted by the H.S.G.M.E. on lignite deposits in the area and on high-quality natural zeolite found in Pentalofos and Petrota. Hydrogeological studies carried out in the wider basin of the Ardas River were also discussed.

In the field of water management, the strong collaboration between the H.S.G.M.E. and the Municipal Water and Sewerage Company of Orestiada (DEYAO) was highlighted. This cooperation includes the granting of a borehole by the H.S.G.M.E. to meet the municipality’s water supply needs, as well as joint efforts to register and document all boreholes in the area.
Regarding the Municipality of Didymoteicho, discussions focused on the serious water supply issues it faces. The possibility of collaboration was explored, involving the preparation of a comprehensive proposal by the H.S.G.M.E. aimed at increasing the quantity and improving the quality of the municipality’s drinking water.
