A team from the Hellenic Survey of Geology and Mineral Exploration (H.S.G.M.E.), consisting of the Head of the Regional Unit of Crete, Ioannis Michalakis, and geologist Eleni Tsolaki, conducted field inspections at water abstraction sites on the remote island of Gavdos. The visit took place as part of the implementation of the project S.A.M.Y. II “Systematic Inventory of Water Boreholes” within the Water District of Crete, carried out by EAGME.
The inspections were attended by Dr. Apostolos Alexopoulos, Emeritus Professor at the Department of Geology and Geoenvironment of the University of Athens, with whom the team also conducted observations of characteristic outcrops of the island’s formations. It is worth noting that Dr. Alexopoulos has been studying the geological structure of Gavdos since 1989.
Additionally, field observations were carried out on key geological formations of the island. During their visit, the EAGME geologists also had the opportunity to follow selected routes from the series “Geotrails in Greece,” part of the pilot publication of I.G.M.E. (2009) under the project “Promotion of Geosites and Geoparks, Contribution to Sustainable Development.”
