The Hellenic Survey of Geology and Mineral Exploration (H.S.G.M.E.) stood by the fire-affected residents of Ancient Olympia, conducting on-site inspections in the areas damaged by the wildfire, following a request from the Mayor of Ancient Olympia, Mr. Giorgos Georgiopoulos.
The H.S.G.M.E. team, consisting of the Director of General and Applied Geology, Mr. Nikos Nikolaou, and geologist Mr. Vasilis Ieronimakis, visited the area on Thursday, August 19, 2021, and carried out geological assessments in the communities of Pelopio, Platanos, Pefka, Lalas (Pothos), Kafkania, Kryoneri, and Nemouta. The visit was part of an initiative to protect the fire-affected regions from landslides and to prevent flooding following the devastating wildfire of August 4, 2021.
The scientists of H.S.G.M.E. pointed out to the Mayor, Mr. Georgiopoulos, and the representatives of the Municipal Authority that the area’s particular topography, combined with the geological composition of the soils and the region’s history of landslides, makes immediate intervention essential.
The H.S.G.M.E. team will assess the situation and promptly submit recommendations to the Mayor for the necessary protective measures, with the goal of ensuring the safety of the residents of Ancient Olympia.
