As part of the research project “Ore Deposit and Mining Exploration within the Public Mining Area of Kimmeria”, between July 17–23, 2021, a team from the Hellenic Survey of Geology and Mineral Exploration (H.S.G.M.E.) conducted fieldwork and held collaboration meetings with local authorities.
The fieldwork was carried out by:
Dr. Marianthi Anastasatou (Geologist–Geochemist, GEP/DOPME)
Dr. Kostas Mavrogonatos (Geologist–Economic Geologist, KOIME/DOPME)
Mr. Anastasios Kirmizopoulos (Field Technician, PMAMTH) and focused on two main areas of investigation:
- Geochemical survey and sampling of soil material and stream sediments
- Geological/economic geology mapping and sampling
The activities were conducted in the central section of the Public Mining Area of Kimmeria (PMAK), with the ultimate goal of producing a surface geochemical map (metal distribution/dispersion) and updating or supplementing earlier geological maps with an emphasis on mineral occurrences.
Samples of soil material, stream sediments, and ores were collected for further laboratory analysis.
Additionally, a collaboration meeting was held with representatives of the Forest Department of Xanthi. The meeting, held in a highly constructive atmosphere, was attended by Mr. Christos Milios (Head of the Forest Department), Mr. Evangelos Mouros (Forester), and Mr. Dimitrios Exioglou (Head of the H.S.G.M.E. Regional Unit of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace – PMAMTH). The discussion focused on improving and maintaining certain forest roads, a project the H.S.G.M.E. intends to undertake, aiming both to enhance accessibility for continuing research within the PMAK and to strengthen forest protection in the area.
A joint on-site inspection followed, involving Mr. E. Mouros from the Xanthi Forest Department and Ms. M. Anastasatou and Mr. K. Mavrogonatos from the H.S.G.M.E., in the areas of interest.
*The “Ore Deposit and Mining Exploration within the Public Mining Area of Kimmeria” project is part of Subproject 3, “Actions for the Utilization of Primary and Secondary Mineral Resources – DYOPY,” of the Operation “Studies and Research Supporting the Energy Sector of Industry and Entrepreneurship – OPYGEK,” funded by the Operational Programme “Competitiveness – Entrepreneurship – Innovation” (EPAnEK 2014–2020).
