As part of the research project conducted by the Hellenic Survey of Geology and Mineral Exploration (H.S.G.M.E.) titled "Ore Deposit and Mining Research within the Public Mining Area of Kimmeria", a team of nine researchers and staff members of the Authority visited and carried out fieldwork within the Public Mining Area of Kimmeria, Xanthi.
The fieldwork focused on the following areas of investigation:
– Geological and Ore Deposit Mapping and Sampling: Konstantinos Mavrogonatos – PhD Geologist, Michail Fitros – MSc Geologist, Adamantia Chatziapostolou – PhD Geologist, Anastasios Kyrmizopoulos – Field Technician.
– Geochemical Sampling of Soil and Stream Sediments: Mariánthi Anastasatou – PhD Geologist, Dimitrios Sgouros – Programmer/Analyst.
– Geophysical Survey using magnetic intensity and magnetic susceptibility measurements for the creation of a magnetic map: Magdalini Aggeli – MSc Mineral Resources Engineer, Dimitrios Tsouvalas – MSc Mineral Resources Engineer, Georgios Mokas – Field Technician.
The three teams worked collaboratively, carrying out large-scale field operations covering a significant area within the Public Mining Area of Kimmeria. Emphasis was placed on zones with surface development of contact metamorphism and mineralization of the skarn and skarnoid types. The goal was to document known mineral occurrences and identify new areas with potential for skarn and/or porphyry-type mineralization.
During the fieldwork, a significant number of samples were collected for microscopic study and for mineralogical and geochemical analyses to be carried out at the laboratories of the H.S.G.M.E. These preliminary investigations confirmed the area’s high mineral potential, and the research team of the H.S.G.M.E. will return for further, in-depth exploration of this promising site.
The Ore Deposit and Mining Research within the Public Mining Area of Kimmeria is part of Subproject 3 “Actions for the Utilization of Primary and Secondary Mineral Resources – DYOPY” under the project “Studies and Research Supporting the Energy Sector, Industry, and Entrepreneurship – OPYGEK”, funded by the Operational Programme “Competitiveness, Entrepreneurship, and Innovation (EPAnEK) 2014–2020”.
