A team from the Hellenic Authority for Geological and Mineral Research (EAGME), led by Dr. Lambros Pyrgiotis – Engineering Geologist, was deployed immediately to the flood-affected areas as part of the operation of EAGME’s Rapid Response Team, which is activated in cases of natural disasters caused by geological factors.
The field inspections focus mainly on semi-mountainous and mountainous settlements where severe landslide phenomena have occurred, and will continue in other affected areas as road access is temporarily restored, in collaboration with the General Secretariat for Civil Protection.
The General Director of EAGME, Mr. Dionysios Goutis, also carried out an on-site inspection in the region to form a comprehensive preliminary assessment of the landslide phenomena that occurred, as well as the possible secondary effects on soil erosion and groundwater aquifers.
As the state’s technical advisor on geohazard management and response, EAGME will continue, as it is its duty, to provide all necessary assessments and propose appropriate restoration measures.
