A team from the Hellenic Survey of Geology and Mineral Exploration (H.S.G.M.E.), within the framework of the Cooperation Memorandum between the General Secretariat for Civil Protection and H.S.G.M.E., and following a request by the General Secretary Nikolaos Hardalias, visited the community of Fotino in the Municipality of Zitsa.
The purpose of the on-site inspection was to examine landslide phenomena that occurred in the area at the end of December 2019, to monitor their further development, and to assess the level of risk.
The team, composed of Nikolaos Nikolaou – Director of General and Applied Geology at H.S.G.M.E., Dr. Evangelos Nikolaou – Head of the Epirus Regional Unit of H.S.G.M.E., and Panagiotis Paschos – Geologist at H.S.G.M.E., held a meeting with the Mayor of Zitsa Michalis Pliakos and the Head of the Civil Protection Directorate of the Region of Epirus Dimitris Mavrogiorgos. During the inspection, the H.S.G.M.E. team was accompanied by the President of the Fotino community, Charalampos Athanasiou.
Following the on-site assessment, the H.S.G.M.E. team concluded that there is no risk to the settlement. However, monitoring measures will be proposed at a later stage, as the wider area has a history of landslide occurrences.
