A team from the Hellenic Survey of Geology and Mineral Exploration (H.S.G.M.E.), consisting of Mr. Apostolos Arvanitis, Georgios Vougioukalakis, Markos Xenakis, Christos Mylonas and Polyanthi Trimi, installed between 01 and 08/10/2020 two (2) real-time monitoring stations for the continuous recording and telemetry of parameters of geothermal fluids and the reservoir at the low-temperature geothermal field (of local interest) of Neo Erasmio – Maggana, Regional Unit of Xanthi. The stations were installed in exploratory boreholes constructed by the H.S.G.M.E., recording and transmitting the water level and temperature of the geothermal fluid within the exploited reservoir, as well as the outflow temperature of the fluid during pumping at the nearest production borehole to each station.
The geothermal field of Neo Erasmio – Maggana is considered well-studied, with a significant number of exploratory and production wells, and is already being utilized for heating a 185-hectare greenhouse unit, agricultural product dehydration, and subsurface asparagus heating. It is further planned to expand the monitoring coverage with the gradual installation of additional continuous monitoring stations in selected critical borehole locations. The expected outcomes include data collection, database storage, processing, and evaluation of primary measurements, aiming at the rational use and sustainable management of this important geothermal resource.
The installation of these monitoring stations was carried out under the Action “Long-term Monitoring of Thermal Natural Resources and Geothermal Fields of Greece” of the Subproject “Actions for the Rational and Sustainable Utilization of Geothermal Energy – GEOTHERM”, within the Project “Studies and Research Supporting the Energy Sector of Industry and Entrepreneurship – OPYGEC”. This Action is directly linked to Subproject 1, “Management Plans for Low-Temperature Geothermal Fields (DIA.GEOTH.)” under the Operation “Upgrading the Operations of the General Secretariat for Energy and Mineral Resources for Supporting the Business Environment and the Extroversion of Enterprises” (Agreement between the Ministry of Environment and Energy and H.S.G.M.E.). Both subprojects, “GEOTHERM” and “DIA.GEOTH.”, are implemented by the Department of Geothermal Energy & Thermal Mineral Resources (GEOTHE) of the H.S.G.M.E..
The following images present:
(a) the locations of the two monitoring stations in the Neo Erasmio – Maggana geothermal field relative to other exploratory and production wells,
(b) photographs of the exploratory wells where the continuous pressure and temperature sensors were installed in the reservoir, and the nearby production wells,
(c) the control boxes containing the electronic data collection, storage, and transmission equipment,
(d) detailed images of the installed monitoring system, and
(e) diagrams of the recorded parameters.
The installation of the first two monitoring, recording, and telemetry stations in the Neo Erasmio – Maggana geothermal field was made possible thanks to access permits for the wells M6/GP-6 and M15/GP-15, granted by the companies “Thermokia Thrakis S.A.” and “Geothermiki Ellados E.P.E.”, to which the corresponding wells have been leased by the Hellenic State. The H.S.G.M.E. expresses its sincere gratitude to these companies for their cooperation.
