The national effort to utilize Greece’s Critical Raw Materials (CRMs) and the key role of the Hellenic Survey of Geology and Mineral Exploration (EAGME) in this strategic plan constitute a top priority for the Ministry of Environment and Energy (YPEN). This commitment is reflected in the recent Ministerial Decision concerning the allocation of revenues from the 2024 auction of greenhouse gas emission rights, estimated at around €1.2 billion.
According to the decision, EAGME will receive 1.27% of the total revenue—up to €15 million— to support its research on Critical Raw Materials.
EAGME’s General Director, Mr. Dionysios Goutis, stated: “I would like to warmly thank the Minister of Environment and Energy, Mr. Thodoros Skylakakis, the Deputy Minister, Ms. Alexandra Sdoukou, and the Secretary General for Energy and Mineral Resources, Mr. Aristotelis Aivaliotis, for this decision. It constitutes tangible recognition of EAGME’s decisive contribution, as we continue to work closely with YPEN to accelerate the responsible exploitation of the country’s mineral wealth, with the shared goal of strengthening the national economy.”
He added: “This funding enables the development of initiatives for the utilization of Strategic and Critical Raw Materials, which are vital for supporting the Green Deal and advancing the Circular Economy. EAGME’s new research activities are part of our National Mineral Exploration Programs, designed to increase Greece’s reserves and generate measurable economic and social value. We must explore and utilize our nation’s Critical Raw Materials to reduce both Greece’s and the European Union’s dependence on third countries.”
