The inventory of water boreholes in regions of Thessaly continues, carried out by the Hellenic Survey of Geology and Mineral Exploration (H.S.G.M.E.) as part of the program “Systematic Inventory of Water Boreholes for all uses across the country – SAMY II.”
During meetings held between an H.S.G.M.E. team and the Mayors of Kileler and Larissa, it was decided that the inventory work would begin immediately in both municipalities. Both mayors assured that they would fully support the scientists of the Authority in carrying out their work.
On May 17, 2021, the Head of the Regional Unit of Western Macedonia, Dimitris Matthaiopoulos, together with geologists Maria Tzima and Argyris Kouskouras, met with the Mayor of Kileler, Thanasis Nasiakopoulos, to brief him on the objectives of the SAMY II program and to request his cooperation in launching the work. Mr. Nasiakopoulos described the scientists’ project as highly significant and assured that he would facilitate its implementation in every possible way.
The completion of the inventory in the Municipality of Kileler is expected to take four months. Alongside the registration of water boreholes and the completion of survey forms, all data will be entered into a digital database.

On May 18, 2021, the H.S.G.M.E. team — consisting of the Head of the Regional Unit of Western Macedonia, Dimitris Matthaiopoulos, Maria Tzima, and Ilias Gouliaveras — met with the Mayor of Larissa, Apostolos Kalogiannis, and the General Director of DEYAL, Dimitris Savvorginakis. The meeting focused on the inventory of water boreholes in the Municipality of Larissa, which is scheduled to begin on Monday, May 24, 2021. Mayor Kalogiannis assured that the H.S.G.M.E. would receive full support from both central services and local communities.
It is noted that the Hellenic Survey of Geology and Mineral Exploration has been assigned by the Ministry of Environment and Energy to implement the nationwide Systematic Inventory of Water Boreholes for all uses. The SAMY II program aims to systematically and comprehensively record all water boreholes across the country’s water districts and to assess the extractable water quantities per use and per groundwater system. The project forms part of Greece’s commitments to the sustainable management of its water resources.
