The Hellenic Survey of Geology and Mineral Exploration (H.S.G.M.E.) activated its Rapid Response Team following an order from the General Directorate, after a strong earthquake occurred in Northwestern Greece, specifically in the Municipality of Parga, on March 21, 2020, at 02:50 local time. According to data from the Geodynamic Institute of the National Observatory of Athens, the earthquake had a magnitude of 5.6 and a focal depth of 7.9 km.
The Authority’s geologist, Dr. Panagiotis Paschos, from the Regional Unit of Epirus of H.S.G.M.E., visited the affected area just a few hours after the earthquake to provide scientific support. He immediately contacted the Director of the Independent Directorate of Civil Protection of the Epirus Region, Mr. Dimitris Mavrogiorgos, as well as the Mayor of Parga, Mr. Nikos Zacharias.

Turbidity phenomena caused by seismic activity in the waters of the springs emerging in the narrow passages of the Acheron River.
The on-site inspection focused mainly on examining landslide phenomena along the road network, aiming at an immediate assessment of risk and the prompt briefing of the authorities, as well as the recording of macroseismic observations.
The seismic activity resulted in damage to buildings (mainly old masonry structures but also some with reinforced concrete frameworks) and in rockfalls along the steep artificial slopes of the provincial and municipal road network.

Rockfalls along the local provincial road network.
Of particular interest was the occurrence of strong turbidity in the spring waters emerging in the narrow passages of the Acheron River as a result of the seismic activity.
Following the on-site inspection by the H.S.G.M.E. team, there has been continuous communication with the local authorities due to the ongoing aftershock activity, to provide support whenever required.
