A team from the Hellenic Survey of Geology and Mineral Exploration (H.S.G.M.E.), as part of the operation of the Authority’s Rapid Response Unit, visited on January 13, 2020, the Local Community of Pitsidia in the Municipality of Phaistos, following a directive from the H.S.G.M.E. administration.
The team, consisting of E. Zourmpakis – Mining Engineer, E. Athanasouli – Geologist, and I. Michalakis – Geologist of the Regional Unit of Crete of the H.S.G.M.E., carried out an on-site inspection in cooperation with the President of the Local Community, Mr. Spinthakis, regarding the recent rockfall incident.
The destructive event involved the detachment and fall of a rock mass exceeding 30 tons, which had been in an unstable equilibrium above a residential property, causing only material damage upon impact.
During the field inspection, a detailed engineering–geological survey was conducted, the area’s hazard level was assessed, and a comprehensive technical report with recommendations for immediate protective measures is being prepared.
