The Hellenic Survey of Geology and Mineral Exploration (HSGME) responded immediately to the request from the Region of Epirus and the Municipality of Zagori to investigate severe landslide incidents in the area.
Within the framework of its memorandum of cooperation with the General Secretariat for Civil Protection, the HSGME dispatched, on February 11 and 12, 2021, a Rapid Response Team from the Regional Unit of Epirus to the Municipality of Zagori. The team consisted of geologists Dr. Evangelos Nikolaou (Head of the Regional Unit of Epirus) and Panagiotis Paschos.
The HSGME team was accompanied by the Deputy Mayors of Zagori, P. Rouskas and I. Kitsos, during their visits to the areas affected by the landslides.
Specifically, the HSGME geologists carried out on-site inspections of landslides in the Local Community of Demati, at the southern entrance of the Local Community of Petra, along roads in the Local Communities of Itea and Tristeno, as well as at a ground subsidence observed in the village square.
During a meeting between the HSGME team and the Mayor of Zagori, Giorgos Soukuvelos, they provided guidance on the necessary remedial measures to be taken.
