DEPARTMENT OF ANALYTICAL LABORATORIES.

The Department of Analytical Laboratories operates under the Directorate of Water Resources and Geothermal Energy of the HSGME and includes the following laboratories:

A) Water Analysis Laboratory. The Water Analysis Laboratory specializes in chemical and microbiological analyses of water samples intended for drinking, irrigation, industrial, and construction purposes. It measures all legally required parameters, including major elements and trace elements, pollution indicators, heavy and toxic metals, and microbiological factors. The Laboratory has been accredited since 2002 with the ISO/IEC 17025 Standard by the Hellenic Accreditation System. A major part of its work includes the long-term monitoring of numerous samples within the framework of the “Groundwater Monitoring Network” project, focusing on trace elements, heavy metals, and organic parameters. The laboratory also undertakes analyses for third parties, such as bottled water companies, food and beverage industries, construction companies, tourism units, municipalities, regional authorities, educational institutions, private clients, and environmental studies for the Ministry of Environment and Energy. Its advanced technological infrastructure includes:

  • ICP-MS (Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometer)
  • ICP-OES (Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectrometer)
  • Ionic Chromatography Systems
  • Spectrophotometers
  • Automatic Titration Equipment
  • Total Organic Carbon Analyzer

B) Laboratory of Rocks, Ores, and Solid Fuels. This laboratory focuses on the analysis of mineral raw materials, soils, environmental samples, solid fuels (such as lignite, peat, coal, and fly ash), as well as alternative energy raw materials (such as biofuels). Analyses cover major and trace elements, heavy and toxic metals, and rare earth elements. Its state-of-the-art infrastructure, in addition to ICP-MS and ICP-OES, includes:

  • Atomic Absorption Spectrometers
  • Calorimeter
  • Thermogravimetric Analyzer
  • Carbon-Sulfur Analyzer
  • Elemental Analyzer
