The Regional Unit of the Peloponnese of H.S.G.M.E. was established in 1977 and is based in Tripoli. Its initial area of responsibility and activity covered the Peloponnese.
Its purpose was to ensure the Authority’s substantive presence in the Peloponnese and to support local communities by providing specialist geoscience expertise. Following the division of Greece into 13 Administrative Regions, the Unit has taken on a supra-regional role. For more than 40 years it has addressed and solved issues across all branches of Geology and Mineral Exploration, and has developed a strong research portfolio in both baseline (infrastructure) studies and applied research, including studies and assignments for third parties.
The R.U. has delivered significant work in the following fields:
Economic Geology
General Geology
Mapping across the entire Region (40 map sheets) at 1:50,000 scale, along with specialized geological investigations at 1:5,000.
Engineering Geology
Reconnaissance and full-scope investigations have been carried out in all Regional Units of the Peloponnese (Argolida 17, Arkadia 85, Korinthia 59, Messinia 38, Laconia 33) on issues related to landslides (e.g., km 123 of the Corinth–Tripoli National Road), rockfalls (e.g., Arvanitia, Nafplio), coastal erosion, macroseismic observations, land-use suitability, dams, and mine stability.
Energy Materials
Identification, study, and delineation of lignite deposits in various parts of the Peloponnese Region.
Geothermal Energy
Study on the use of geothermal energy for residential purposes in Kalamata.
Hydrogeology
All of the above have been carried out in collaboration with the Central Services, local authorities at all levels, and the competent public and wider-public-sector bodies. Today, the staff of the Regional Unit of the Peloponnese supports H.S.G.M.E. projects in the Region in the areas of hydrogeology, third-party assignments, and engineering geology.
